$400,000 Homes in Texas, Minnesota and Connecticut

This house is in Ravinia Heights, where many of the homes were built in the 1920s, in Tudor Revival or Spanish Colonial Revival style, and most have been well maintained. The neighborhood is near some of Dallas’s biggest draws: The Bishop Arts District, a shopping and dining destination, is less than three miles away; Trammell Crow Park, a green space running along either side of the Trinity River, is a little more than five miles away.

The property is a few blocks from the public Lida Hooe Elementary School and a mile and a half from W.E. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy and Middle School, where students focus on the visual and performing arts.

Size: 1,188 square feet

Price per square foot: $337

Indoors: A paved path leads from the street to the bright yellow front door, set beneath a white-painted brick arch.

The door opens into a living room with oak floors, a fireplace with a brick surround, a wide window facing the street and high, pitched ceilings. This space is open to an eat-in kitchen with custom-designed cabinets and room for a small table near French doors that open to the backyard.

Between the kitchen and the living area is a laundry closet. Beyond, a hallway leads to the bedrooms and bathrooms: At one end of the hall is a guest room with space for a double bed and a desk; next door is a bathroom with a combined tub and shower lined with new green tile. At the other end of the hall is the primary suite, which has access to the rear deck. The bedroom is large enough to hold a queen-size bed; the bathroom has penny-tile floors and a glass-walled walk-in shower.

Outdoor space: The wood deck off the kitchen and primary bedroom has room for a dining table and a barbecue. It steps down to a grassy area with two large, mature trees that is enclosed by a wood fence. Next to the house is a driveway with a motorized gate.

Taxes: $7,632 (estimated)

This house is in a quiet neighborhood a few blocks from Shady Oak Lake, a popular gathering spot with a community beach, a playground, volleyball courts and other amenities. It is also close to the 15-mile Lake Minnetonka Regional Trail, which offers the pedestrians, runners and cyclists who frequent it views of the area’s lakes.

Three golf courses are within a 10-minute drive: Interlachen Country Club and Oak Ridge Country Club are private, but Meadowbrook Golf Course is open to the public. Downtown Minneapolis is a 20-minute drive.

Size: 1,734 square feet

Price per square foot: $231

Indoors: This house is set back from the street, behind a large lawn. The front door opens into a foyer with hardwood floors.

Beyond is a living room with a large window overlooking the yard and glass doors that open to a screened porch with wood floors and a ceiling fan.

Through an arched doorway is a dining room that has a modern chandelier with Edison-style hanging bulbs. The adjoining kitchen has updated stainless steel appliances, a white-tile backsplash and butcher-block counters on either side of the range.

One bedroom, off the foyer, is currently used as a home office and gym. The bathroom is nearby, with a combined tub and shower.

The primary bedroom is on the second floor, with sloped ceilings and windows that fill the space with light. The third bedroom is across the hall, with room for a double bed and a desk.

The lowest level of the house is finished and used as a den, with space for a sectional sofa and a television.

Outdoor space: In the grassy yard that surrounds the house there is one area devoted to play equipment and another with a stone fire pit. The detached garage has two parking spots and an electric-car charger.

Branford, a shoreline town on the Long Island Sound, was a bustling resort area in the mid 19th century, with summer houses and inns drawing visitors from around the region. Today, it is a convenient spot for those commuting into New Haven or Hartford: Yale University, in downtown New Haven, is a 15-minute drive; downtown Hartford is less than an hour away.

This house is about 15 minutes from the hiking trails surrounding Lake Saltonstall. Rose Orchards, where visitors can pick apples and pumpkins in the fall and strawberries and blueberries in the summer, is five minutes away.

Size: 2,040 square feet

Price per square foot: $191

Indoors: A wraparound porch with a stone base frames the house, offering ample room for entertaining.

The front door opens into a family room separated from a larger living area by a wide, column-flanked doorway. Both spaces have recently refinished hardwood floors.

The windowed dining room is toward the back of the house, with space for a long table and easy access to the kitchen, which has new granite countertops and glass doors that open to the backyard. A powder room with an exposed-brick wall is also in this part of the house.

All four bedrooms and the full bathroom are on the second floor, reached by a staircase near the living room.

The primary bedroom and the bedroom next door are each big enough to hold a queen-size bed. The other two bedrooms are smaller, with space for twin-size beds or home-office setups. The full bathroom, like the kitchen, was recently updated.

The attic is partially finished and could be used as an additional bedroom or a playroom.

Outdoor space: The back patio, off the kitchen, is used by the sellers for outdoor entertaining, with picnic tables and a barbecue. A stone fire pit is at the center of the yard, and the property extends beyond it, into the woods. During a recent renovation, the house was connected to the town’s public sewer and water systems.

Taxes: $5,820 (estimated)
